Why are your pool lights no longer working? Let’s look at a few common reasons why your lights are failing and what you can do to fix this issue.
Reasons Why Your Pool Lights Are Not Working
There are a few common reasons why your pool lights may not be working properly. Take a look at these issues below and what you can do as a pool owner to fix your lights.
1. Burnt Out Bulbs
This is the most common reason why your pool lights are failing to work. If this is the case with your lights, then all you have to do is switch out the bulb.
Follow these steps to properly switch out the bulb(s):
- Start by shutting off the breaker and power switches.
- Remove both the lens and bulb.
- Replace the bulb with a new bulb.
- Turn the light on to test it.
- Place the bulb underwater, ensuring there are no air leaks.
- Replace the bulb and fixture as long as everything is working properly.
If this issue is still unresolved, the new light bulb may be defective. Switch out the bulb with a different one.
2. Broken Screw Hole
Older models of pool lights may feature a screw hole. This hole can wear out or break over time, no longer holding the fixture in place. You can insert a light wedge in order to hold this fixture in place.
If the fixture is still not secure, water may leak into it and crush the light cord conduit. If the conduit becomes damaged, it will need to be sealed.
3. Water Behind Lens
Water that finds its way behind a lens can cause the light to burn out. Carefully remove the fixture if you believe this is the issue. Dry the light fixture completely before reassembling with a new bulb.
Once reassembled, if small bubbles form, then the gasket has not been re-installed tightly enough. If the light is still not working, reinspect the light, checking for any holes, leaks, or warping.
4. GFCI Outlet Failing
If the lens does appear to be working properly, it may be time to direct your attention toward the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet. If you notice the GFCI outlet’s button is red, this indicates that the electricity is not getting to the light.
Inspect the breaker, fuse, and switches at this time. Make sure all of these are in the “ON” position before moving forward.
